July 2019 Road Trip

My fiancee and I are planning an epic 24-28 day road trip next July.

This is the rough route we have planned. We are avid hikers, and really just love the outdoors in general. We do enjoy cities, but more so as a break from hiking. We intend to take up to 28 days to complete this route. We may even add a couple of days, but only if we feel the need to. My estimates at each place are based on the assumption we don't stop anywhere in-between...we're definitely flexible to change things up!

Rapid City, SD was our first intended stop. Being east-coasters, we don't have much interest in places close to us. We've been to Chicago, and not much else sticks out to us, at least that we're aware of. If anyone has any pit-stops along the way that they recommend to break up the driving, we'd love to know!

For Rapid City itself, we more or less intend to spend a few days exploring Badlands National Park, Black Hills National Forest, and Custer State Park. We didn't have much interest in Wind Cave National Park, but would love to hear what others think of it. Any cool outdoorsy stuff that you can recommend for the Rapid City area would be great!

Gillette, WY was going to be more of a pit-stop between our time in Rapid City and Sheridan, WY. We planned to take our time leaving Rapid City, then venture to Devil's Tower National Monument, then settle down in Gillette for the evening.

Sheridan, WY was going to be a longer pit-stop, maybe a day or 2, to explore Bighorn National Forest. Any hikes or trails that you recommend would be great, it really looks like a beautiful area.

Rising Sun Motor Inn will be our home base for our time in Glacier National Park. We plan on 4 nights there, 3 full days. We're excited to hopefully hike all of the Highline Trail, Grinnell Glacier, and Hidden Lake Lookout. We already have a room booked at Rising Sun Motor Inn. We have no idea what we want to do on the way though between Sheridan, WY and Glacier.

Jackson, WY will be our next stop. We have no idea where to stop at along the way coming from Glacier, but I do know we intend to spend 2 days or so in Grand Teton National Park, and then maybe spend 1 day at Yellowstone (we've both been to Yellowstone).

Moab, UT was our next desired stop to see Arches National Park. Is Canyonlands worth visiting as well? Colorado National Monument worth a visit? We're up for anything in this area...we'll probably spend 2 days here. It'll be hard to top Zion and Bryce though :) We don't know of anywhere to stop along the way from Jackson, WY to Moab.

Denver, CO is more of a placeholder, as we're keen on visiting Rocky Mountain National Park for a couple of days. However, Colorado seems to have such beautiful, diverse landscapes, we're struggling to decide where exactly we want to go. Black Canyon of the Gunnison looks beautiful, as does Great Sand Dunes. Considering all the mountains we'll see in Glacier and Grand Teton, we may pass on RMNP if these other spots are worth it. We just are not sure.

After Colorado, it's basically haul butt back home. We'll certainly make a pit-stop in Kansas City, but beyond that we don't have any planned stops. As a final note, we're both very comfortable driving long distances. We've done a couple of road trips now covering long distances and have fared very well. Hopefully that trend continues! Thank you!
