road trip planning: Dallas to Maine
Hi,
I'm planning a long road trip and would love any advice about the best route to take, best sites to see, and car camping. I've been doing research for a few weeks, but have never done a trip like this. I'd like to try sleeping in my car (scion xB - just enough space with all the seats down), so I'll be looking for good places along the way to park for the night.
A few details:
- I'm going solo. No other people or pets.
- I'm unemployed right now and have enough money saved up to afford several weeks of roadtripping. So I want to enjoy my time off before I have to get back to work. I won't really be in a hurry and am open to stopping alot and seeing cool sites.
- I have a national park pass so I'd like to see as many national parks as possible along the way. Mostly I'd prefer to find natural attractions as opposed to sites in big cities.
- I can walk but I'm not in good shape so while I love hiking, I can't handle anything long or strenuous. I'd love to hear about easy hikes along the way.
- After I get to Maine, I'm thinking about cruising the east coast to Miami before returning home to Dallas. I haven't made any certain decisions on my route yet so I'm open to suggestions. (btw, I just lived in the DC area for about ten years so I probably won't spend much time in that region as I've already seen most of the sites several times)
- I love photography. So my main goals for the trip are just to have fun and take lots of pictures.
- I don't have a specific departure date yet, but I think it will be within the next four weeks. It's really as soon as I can get well-prepared enough to feel comfortable making the trip. Right now my car is in good shape. I've sorted out a budget. And made an exhaustive packing list. And I've been watching/reading as much as I can find online about roadtripping with your car as your home. Now I need to plan my route and decide what to see and where to stop each night.
I'd really appreciate any advice.
