Two Week Road Trip from Chicago and Back - Suggestions?
My partner and I just finished a stressful summer full of work and summer classes. We want to do something nice and take a road trip, ideally really low budget but we're still willing to find the cheapest motel everywhere we go instead of adding any difficulty when it comes to camping.
I don't know where to go! We'd like this to be fun and picturesque, and we're not scared of driving. We both love wines, cute towns with nice bars, and I would love to see some gorgeous natural scenes and have the opportunity to take some awesome hikes (don't matter how long so long as we get back to a motel by the night).
I was thinking Yellowstone would be really cool to check out. But along the way I can only really think of National Parks like the Badlands. We'd like a better mixture of nice towns/local flair with the natural environments, since I'm the only outdoorsy one. Along the east coasts I would DIEEE to get to Acadia National Park, but the drive seems a bit difficult for two (maybe a half) weeks.
tl;dr conditions:
- Some Great Hikes, Some Great Towns (a mix)
- stargazing!!!
- Easy for low budget (max $2,000)
- Willing to drive longish stretches (but Maine is too far for us)
