Slightly worried about my coast to coast roadtrip through the South (CA to FL) Advice? Tips?
My boyfriend(28M) and I(25F) are planning on doing a road trip through the South at the end of next March. We're both super excited about it, and this has been a trip I've been dreaming about doing for about 12 years now! My one (probably stupid) concern is that I'm Mexican and he's white. We were both born and raised in Los Angeles County, so we've never had any incidences of people making comments or treating us badly, and all we've ever heard is that people in the South are racist, backwards, and violent. Now, I personally don't think people in the South are honestly as bad as people out here make them seem. I believe that as long as you're polite, have a good sense of humor, and arent some loud asshole, you'll be alright just about anywhere in the world, but some of my friends and family have been planting seeds of doubt in head, ever since I told them about my plans! I want to be able to prove them wrong, that people aren't as "bad" as the stereotypes and the media make them seem! Am I just being a naive optimist? Maybe people will react violently towards us? Any other latin ladies (or really, any minority woman) roadtripped through the deep South, or live there, with any insight on this?? Am I being dumb, for being worried about this? Southerners, what do you think??? I'm sorry if this isn't very roadtrip related. I'm just not really sure where else to post this.
TL;DR: Are my boyfriend and I gonna be treated shitty in bars and restaurants, and things during our roadtrip through the South, because I'm Mexican and he's white?
