Background: For the past 13 years my wife and I have done a 3 week road trip to somewhere in the US in July/August (she's a school teacher), so we 'know what we are doing' but I still like to see if anyone can check our work and possible find a better route or order to do things that we have planned. Our trips are 100% camping / hiking based and revolve around seeing and doing things around that (we don't care about large cities).

We will leave for this trip on July 12th and return home (Indianapolis) on the 30th.

Basic outline:

  1. Capitol Reef NP
  2. Bryce Canyon NP (get there via HWY 12)
  3. Zion NP
  4. Kings Canyon NP
  5. Mammoth Lakes to Lone Pine, CA along HWY 395 (Doing a week hiking along the eastern Sierras)
  6. White Pockets, Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley AZ-UT
    7.Head home through southern CO, possibly some stops here along the way depending on how much time is left.

My main hangup is doing the Utah stuff in the order we plan on doing it the best way to do it? Is there a way to hit all the NPs in Utah plus the Monument Valley area all in one lump without going way out of the way?
