How absolutely late can you book a hotel/motel online through a site like Expedia?
I am roadtripping and I don't want to book hotels since I'm not sure exactly where I'll be. I'm guessing if I walk into a hotel and try to get a room I'll get charged out the ass, while there are much better deals online.
Could I literally sit in the parking lot, make reservation, and then walk in a few minutes and have the reservation or are there certain rules? For example, leaving at 5pm it will take me 3.5 hours to get to my destination, could I book a hotel at some point along the way (or even say half an hour before arriving at the hotel) and expect to be able to check in at 9pm?
I would be staying at bigger but budget chains (Comfort Inn, Days Inn, etc) in case that matters.
FWIW my plan is sorta a loop, Buffalo->Pittsburg->Charleston->Richmond->DC->Philadelphia->Atlantic City->NYC->Buffalo
