European visiting USA first time - where to go?
Me and my friends (mixed age 20-24, living in Scandinavia) have for the past year got into travelling and visited few countries in Europe, some by roadtrip (Driving as much as 3000 km in three days) and flying to prominent places like Rome, London, Berlin etc..
Now, I am the friend in the group who has been planning the trips, budget, timespan of staying in a certain place/city etc. To make it as efficient as possible, I have used respective country's main travelling forums, where most people gave us very good advices on routes using google map, the budget and so on - checked with many different persons on many different travel platforms, and this could be considered the key to our sucessfull and fun trips.
Now, next year, we intend to visit the US, and this will be our first "big" trip (our trips usually consist of 4-7 days). None of has previously visited the States before and want some details on the following aspects:
- If our main objective is to see the prominent places, while still being able to experience the different and authentic cultures of America. Where should we travel, which cities/places so to say? How do we make the route the most effective? Our initial thought was to land in California and hire a car and road trip to New York while visiting all states in between, however, we will miss many states -- hence if we want to see MOST of it, which route is the most viable?
- How many weeks are sufficient for this route? We thought one month would be viable to perhaps visit many, if not all states, given we stay for a short time at everyone and "enjoy best of it".
- What is each state known for? For instance, I would love to visit Texas and eat their BBQ, and hopefully experience the "southern hospitality" I've heard so much about, or the beauty of Colorado, and city-life of New York, the vast and endless streches of "nothing" in Midwest etc.. Is there any guide to which cities/places/activites you must see/do in a certain state? Which state/cities can one can we not miss out on? We want something different from Europe.
- Lastly, our budget was perhaps 5000 USD per person -- would that be sufficient and realistic?
- To roadtrip, is driving ourself the best option (and is it safe to travel in the US or are certain states/cities to be avoided?) or should we use the public transport?
