6-Day Trip from Richmond to Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Hi all, I’m thinking of doing a trip at the end of this month to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It’s about a 7 hour trip whether I go through Tennessee or North Carolina so I was thinking of making it a round trip.
I’m traveling solo and planning to car camp, but may stay at an affordable Air BnB in Asheville if anyone has any suggestions. I also have a tent and am comfortable camping in the backcountry if there’s a good campsite I should stay at.
I’m thinking of taking 81 to Roanoke and maybe exploring there and potentially hiking McAfee Knob. I’ve heard really good things about Grayson Highlands and would like to stop there. I don’t know anything about the stretch between there and the Tennessee entrance to GSM NP except that there are some tourist trap towns.
At the park itself, I’m looking at the Smokemont campground mostly just because the location seems central. I’ve never been to the park before so any suggestions while I’m there would be helpful.
On the way back I figured I’d take 40 to 85 and pass through Asheville. I’d be interested in recommendations there but especially on what else there is between Asheville and Richmond.
My favorite road trips out west have included “secret gems” like hot springs and volcano tunnels. While I know I won’t find those things here, I’m looking for free or cheap spots not far from my route that are worth seeing. Ideally they’d also offer a chance to meet and interact with people doing the same.
