Solo Traveling with Rideshare Apps - what's your favorite?

Looking for solo traveler's opinions on their favorite rideshare apps while abroad, the pros and cons and possibly any lesser known services, maybe specific to that country, that you enjoy.

I'll list why I love them so much (especially when traveling alone), and suggested improvements that you can critique or shed more light on.

Used

  • Uber (everywhere), Grab (Asia), Gett (Israel), Pass (Cambodia - private cars and tuktuks)

Haven’t used

  • Curb, Lyft, and all others abroad

What’s so nice about them (from a riders perspective)

  • You typically know the price ahead of time, so you know you’re not getting scammed (Big issue in countries like Egypt)

  • Your route is clearly marked for the driver in case he doesn’t know where he’s going (Big issue in countries like Cambodia)

  • The app operates in the native language for the driver and passenger separately. (Huge help in countries like Ukraine where knowing English is uncommon)

  • Cashless ride and tips (at least tips for Uber). You don’t have to use local currency, which is good to save for other purchases in more cash-dependent countries that don’t commonly accept credit cards, or have a spending requirement to use cards.

  • Bonuses like Grab rewards that you can spend on free rides or on other items like food, drink, shopping, etc.

Ideas to improve ridesharing platforms

  • Be able to tip in app, always. This shouldn’t be hard to standardize and utilize during the rating/review of the driver.

  • Things like Grab rewards are an excellent incentive to continue using and should be common.

  • Once a driver has registered and entered their car information, a standardized picture should be available on display as you’re waiting for your driver (Ex: Silver Perodua Myvi, an approved Google image search of that will be next to driver picture). This way foreigners don’t have to google car makes and models every time to have an idea of what they’re looking for.

  • Be able to favorite drivers and see if they’re available later for use. This provides more incentive for drivers to offer good service/vehicles, and allows them to make more money when they have riders that enjoy them. And you as a passenger have a more consistent driver that you can see on the map if they are active/nearby or not. And even request them and be willing to wait longer if they are currently on another ride. Drivers should then be able to block passengers at any time if there are issues, like stalking.

  • Fix pin issues and help them be more accurate to your gps location, or offer better pinning specifics of current location, like arrivals/departures at airports and what floor. (This is important in countries with less specific/mistakable addresses, like Malaysia).
