Death or serious illness in family member while long term traveling, what did you do?
Hey guys, I imagine this has already been asked in some way but I'm really struggling with this decision, I hope no one thinks I'm a bad person for even asking.
I'm currently traveling long term, I've been away for almost 1.5 years. Before I left i visited my grandparents who are elderly at 84. I got a call a couple of days ago that my granddad has had several bouts of pneumonia, and along with his parkinsons is in a pretty bad way. The decision of whether to go home right now should be a simple one.
However I'm currently working in the outback of australia. More specifically I'm about two days drive from Sydney, my cars got a dead battery on a separate farm (130kms away ) so I'd need to get someone to jump me meaning I couldn't leave immediately even if I wanted to. And the flights would take 30hours back to the UK and I'd need to find somewhere to store my van in Sydney.
Money is a factor, I'm on the last three months of my visa when I'm meant to be seeing everything and for those of you who know what I'm talking about I'm about two weeks short of my 88 days for my second year.
I don't know what to do right now, I can't afford to spend too long visiting the UK. If I go back now I'll have to leave my outback job, travel for potentially 5 or 6 days and so I may not be able to stay long enough for a potential funeral.
My dad says he doubts hell survive my sisters are very concerned but a tad more positive.
What have you guys done in a similar situation? I'm seriously troubled right now due to how far away I am and everything else.
Tl;Dr - my grandad is really ill and will quite possibly die but I'm in the middle of longer term travel working in a remote part of the Australian outback. What did other people do in a similar situation?
