Traveling from Hanoi to Sapa and back. Any advice/ideas/recommendations?

Unfortunately I'll only have one week to spend in Vietnam. The plan is to make Hanoi my home base and take a trip up to Sapa for a few days in the middle/latter half of that week. I've done some research and it seems like the options are train or bus, and from what I understand buses get you there much faster.

I guess I'm just looking for advice because I'm a stickler when it comes to time and I'm getting older, my eyesight isn't that great these days, so I give myself plenty of time for mistakes and so forth. I'm the guy who gets to the airport 4 or 5 hours (at least) before my flight. Money isn't really an issue, so what's the most convenient and reliable way to make the round-trip from Hanoi to Sapa?

I spent a month in Cambodia and Thailand, so it's not my first time in SEA, but first time hitting Laos and Vietnam.
