PSA: Don't pet aggressive street dogs in SEA, you're not the dog whisperer
Minor rant. Just got back from SEA and just saw some really stupid dog loving travelers.
I strike up a conversation with an American hipster couple (we'll call them bob and alice) in my hostel in Munduk about Bali and one of the things they were complaining about was how locals treat street dogs namely refusing to give dogs food and not petting them. Anyway I try to explain to them that in SEA street dogs can be aggressive and carry diseases so a lot of locals see them as pests rather than as cute pets like they're usually seen in the west.
They then invite me to get some food and we walk to a satay vendor. On the way we run into a pack of three dogs. The dogs were barking and coming to us. I suggest crossing the street but the couple brushes me off: "they just want to play, they're wagging their tail". They start trying to play with and pet the dogs. However, after a minute one of the dogs bites Alice in the calf. We go back to the hostel immediately and we tell the hostel staff. They tell her she has to go to the hospital in Singaraja as soon as possible to get the rabies shots. Munduk is about 1 hours from Singaraja. They had to wait 30 mins to get a taxi and she was clearly in pain but there was not a lot to do while waiting.
TL:DR: Don't try to play with street dogs unless you fancy paying for rabies shots as much as they may remind you of your fluffy pet.
Edit: typo
