First Solo Trip: 1 Month in Sayulita, Mx in July 37(F) w/ Questions
I'm spending the whole month of July in Sayulita, Mexico. This will be my first solo trip and I'm super excited but also a bit nervous. I'm a 37-year-old female literature professor looking to get out of my comfort zone and decompress as well. My concerns are general and specific. Any advice?
July is the off-season, which I think means that there will be fewer people to meet and things to do. Does anyone have any experience visiting this part of Mexico at this time of year? I'd like to take surf lessons, for example, but am not sure what the conditions are like in July. I'm also a little concerned that a month may be too long of a stay in such a small town at this time of year (but the plane ticket is already purchased!). My plan is to get away, reset after a difficult year, and spend some much-needed time on my own as well as meeting new folks. But what to do if I get bored, lonely, or homesick?
Weather: How rainy is it likely to be? I'm from Miami originally and I really enjoy summers there (rain in the afternoon daily, and very hot and humid, which I actually like). Should I expect something similar in Sayulita or will it be more tropical storm type weather that keeps me inside and away from the beach? I've heard rumors of terrible sewage issues contaminating the surf beach in town and people getting very sick from swimming/surfing. I can't tell if these are just hysterical American horror stories about Mexico, or if they should be taken more seriously. I've also heard Sayulita has gotten their infrastructure under control recently and fixed the problem. Can anyone help me parse out these conflicting stories?
Finally, any general advice for someone my age traveling solo for the first time? I have plenty of life experience, am pretty adventurous, smart, and very friendly, but also sometimes a bit shy, especially when it comes to approaching people in groups and can talk myself out of potentially fun and harmless situations if I get to thinking too much about possible dangers (if that makes any sense).
Ok, that's about it! Thanks to anyone who's read this long post and can provide any advice! :)
