Where to go next, after Japan, South Korea and Thailand? Loved Japan, didn't like Thailand.
I went travelling last year for 2 months, spent a month in Thailand and 3 weeks in Japan, with a few days in Korea before heading home.
I didn't enjoy myself much in Thailand. I had a hard time meeting anyone, and did nearly everything solo. It was pretty lonely, although the prices, beaches and food were fantastic. When I went to Japan, however, I met a ton of people, went out every day with someone from the hostel, climbed Mt Fuji, ate great food, and had a blast. I also loved Japan - the culture, the landscape, the people, everything. Korea was like a less interesting version of Japan, and I wasn't too interested.
I've never travelled anywhere else, and I now have a month to travel. I'll leave in the next few weeks. Any ideas on where I should go? A large part of me wants to go back to Japan (and explore Kyushu/southern Honshu, where I didn't go), but I've been getting advice that I should try other places rather than going back.
I'm looking for a place that has backpackers that travel solo and are social - I found Thailand to be like a big spring break place for people who came with a group, whereas Japan was a lot of solo travellers interested in the country itself. What other countries have travellers like that? I'm also looking for someplace very foreign (so not Europe - I'm Canadian), and ideally with good food and cheap costs, although I can settle if needed.
Any advice? Does anything come to mind to you more experienced solo travelers?
