West Coast Summer Trip (revisited)
So I made a post on r/roadtrip some time again looking for advice on making a big road trip from the east to west coast. With the amount of time I was working with, my original plan can't work. But I found an alternative.
So my friend and I are flying into San Diego at the very end of May and plan on renting a car for almost 3 weeks (May 31 -June 19). We're on somewhat of a tight budget so we want to camp (esp free campsites!) or sleep in the car whenever we can. So far the main locations we wanna hit up: Joshua Tree, Grand Canyon, Vegas, Death Valley, Yosemite (specifically john muir woods and mammoth lakes to name a couple points of interest around there), San Francisco and Big Sur.
I've been doing as much research as I can about each location and I realize we're going at the peak of summer so the crowds will be there.
Any tips you have to offer about this route and visiting these destinations on a budget? Tips for traveling with camping gear? I think we might pack a separate bag to check in for just our gear.
A side note, my friend and I are both young women who want to stay safe on a trip in a big new place neither one us of has been before. Tips in regards to staying safe would also be greatly appreciated.
