Suggestions for Colombo
I'm spending two weeks in Colombo in mid December. I can't go too far from the city as I have already booked my (very luxurious) hotel and can't afford to double up on accommodation, plus I am going in order to bridesmaid at a wedding. I will be left entirely to my own devices apart from the wedding day itself and a sari fitting, so it is a solo trip for all intents and purposes, but I need to be on hand in case of emergencies.
I have a few things planned/booked: a food and walking tour of the city (booked); Sigiriya Rock Temple daytrip (booked); a trip to an elephant sanctuary (planned - any recommendation for good, ethical ones near Colombo would be appreciated). Apart from that, I have about 6 more days to fill. It is also my birthday while I am there and would like to do something unmissable, and eat very well, on that day.
Interests - I love food, like shopping, really like museums, and I have an interest in colonial and 19th century history, world religions, wildlife, and natural history. I enjoy hiking, cycling and swimming.
Limitations - I don't cope well with heat, so I am wary of committing to anything very strenuous. I can't drive so will be dependent on public transport or private hire/tour cars to get around. I'm a 20-something woman travelling alone, and I have to be in one piece for the wedding at the end of my stay, so while I am a bit of a thrill-seeker usually, I don't want to do anything that feels too unsafe. I'm a relatively inexperienced traveller, having been mainly on short trips to continental Europe and USA, so any general tips for travelling in Sri Lanka would be appreciated.
Budget - I'm willing to splurge (say up to £200/$280) in order to do something really special but would prefer things that are free or very good value.
What would you recommend to do that is in Colombo or within daytripping distance, and where are some great places to eat?
Thanks!
