Planning on Peru in June - random questions
While I still haven't formally committed and I still have yet to buy plane tickets or put in a vacation request to my employer, it's looking more and more likely that I'll be visiting Peru for roughly two weeks (maybe 2.5) in mid-to-late June.
I don't really have a proper itinerary yet, but most likely I'd be flying into Lima, staying 1-2 nights, then going to Arequipa and visiting the Colca Canyon, then staying in Cusco for ~3-4 days, then going to Machu Picchu. I'd like to visit Titicaca and also Iquitos but that's probably not going to be possible.
With that, I have a few random questions:
-
I know that you need to book months in advance for the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and at this point it's booked well into October. Are there alternate hiking trails I could do to Machu Picchu that aren't completely booked yet? Bonus points if the trail only takes 3 days or less.
-
Should I get vaccinations in advance? In particular, I've heard a couple of stories about wild dogs randomly roaming the streets of Lima and Cusco. Do you think I should get rabies shots just to be safe?
-
What will the weather be like in June? I know that since Peru is below the equator it'll technically be "winter," but are we talking "SoCal/Mexico winter" or real winter? And should I still bring mosquito repellent?
-
Where in Lima do you recommend I stay? I know Miraflores is a very upscale area that is popular among tourists but I was wondering if there were other neighborhoods I could also consider.
Thanks!
