PA -> WA, 2-3 weeks, end of May, camping
I'm moving to WA for a job and it looks like I'll have about 2, maybe 3 weeks to make the trip. I'm averse to hotels, enjoy camping, and am trying to be as frugal as possible. I also don't like to drive long periods at a time - say, 6-7 hours/day, max - and would ideally like to find short hikes/attractions along the way to break it up even further.
My initial plan is to go across northern PA, Ohio, and Indiana in 2-3 days, then stop for a few days in Illinois, where I have a place to stay. After that I was thinking of going across SD (Badlands), WY to Yellowstone for a few days, then southern ID/ne OR to western WA.
I'm using Roadtrippers to map this out, but I would love more advice on routes, little side trips/attractions, and especially camping. Is it likely to be warm enough to sleep in a hammock in all of these places at the end of May? (I have a big cheap tent, too, if necessary, I just prefer the hammock). Any advice on finding free or cheap campsites along the way? I don't need much, just somewhere safe to string a hammock or a bedroll/tarp, as my car will be full.
