Omaha to eastern South Dakota, Rushmore, Yellowstone, Mt Hood, and finally Portland. Need advice on stops, eats, and gear.
Taking the family (2 adults, 3 kids; 5yrs, 2yrs, 9mo) westward in early June, the first two full weeks, for a trip to see family and friends in Oregon with some scenic stops along the way. We plan on taking 5 days to get to Portland so we can camp in national forest on the way there for the sights and cheap camping rate. We will have a large tent and a couple hammocks. Traveling in our Town and Country van. The way back will be the much faster I-84 to I-80 route with minimal stops.
Looking for advice on rooftop cargo storage so we aren't over crowded inside the van while on the road. Should we go soft cargo bag or a hard shell? What brands are best suited? What should be put in the exterior cargo?
Camping advice. Aside from the obvious Custer area camping near Rushmore/wind caves and Yellowstone, what are some good forest to camp and attractions midway from Yellowstone to Mt Hood?
Any other advice on keeping our sanity, must stop food destinations, amazing natural attractions, child accessible hiking trails or activities, or anything else that could make things easier and keep the fun level high.
