Observations about chain hostels vs small/boutique hostels

Just came back from a trip to the UK and had some observations since I had tried something new! This visit to London was my first time staying in larger chain hostels and I picked out Generator and Wombats. Lesson learned for me: this trip nailed down my preference. Smaller boutique style hostels are definitely more my type of place vs the larger party style/chain hostels.

I don't have any issues making friends at hostels, but it's easy to see a tremendous difference in atmosphere when staying in large hostels. Mostly that they felt closer to the vibe at a hotel versus my experience staying in small hostels where in most cases, the building isn't big enough to have an elevator. Numbers wise, these larger hostels are at least 200+ beds versus maybe 50-75 at most in smaller ones. I think my preference for the smaller places is due to having an easier time interacting with just about everyone staying at the hostel versus how there are hundreds of other people around and you'll be in a small clique between others in your dorm and whomever is in their circles.

Some feedback as far as the actual hostel experience: Wombats was better than Generator in almost every point from rooms, beds, wifi coverage/reliability, shower and toilet facilities. Major points for the fact their dorm rooms have ensuites and the showers are on par with nice hotel showers with high water pressure.

One huge thing I noticed about Generator: they charge for just about everything!!! From luggage storage, locks, towels, to power converters! The huge upside that Generator had was location, it's close to Kings Cross/St Pancras which is nice since that station has multiple tube lines.

Gotta note one last thing: I originally had reservations for Park Villa and opted against it because of location. They did charge a few quid more per night, except they offer a wide range of free amenities to guests, from earplugs, toiletries, laundry detergent, and more.

Would love to hear everyone else's feedback/observations, cheers :)
