How lively is the Gringo trail of SA, compared to the Banana pancake trail of SEA?

So last year i did three months in South East Asia - What made it for me was the large amounts of like minded people i met, who you would end up being best friends with and travelling together with, after only a day of meeting each other.

I'm about to embark on a trip from Cartagena,Colombia, to Lima, Peru, for three months.

What i'd like to know is: while i know the trail is somewhat less trodden, Will there still be a lot of people to meet in the hostels, and what's the average ratio of solo travelers to people in groups?

I was quite taken aback that id say 30-50% of people i met in South East Asia were doing it alone, and i'd like to know if it's similar in that part of the world.

And are the people who travel around South America the same nationalities as the people who travel around south east asia? i understand geographically there will be more north Americans, for example.

I understand these questions are somewhat arbitrary, and either way it won't detract from the amazing trip i'm going to have, it's just something i've been curious to know since i've booked it.

Thanks a lot
