Any tips on a solo trip to Norway?
33 year old male here. I'm looking to go in August and will likely start in Oslo, take the train to Bergen, and rent a car there and go wherever the heart wills. Probably about a week and a half total. I definitely want to get in plenty of hiking and fjord exploration, but I also want to spend time in the cities taking in the museums and culture and what not.
I'm mostly curious about where to stay and how much I could comfortably "wing it". I'm not one to plan out every detail of my trip; I'm happy to just go and figure things out along the way. Should I plan to stay in hostels? What about locals who put up travelers for the night; is that wise?
Also, if I rent a car, is a US driver's license good enough? Any hoops I need to jump through to drive in Norway legally? I want a car to reach the more remote fjords and not worry about schedule, plus my ancestors are from Soknedal, a bit south of Trondheim, and I really want to visit there but probably can't comfortably do it without my own transportation.
Last but certainly not least...what are the most important things to see in Norway??
