Where to stay in Delhi - Paharganj or South Delhi?

I'm currently researching and planning a trip to India. It'll be my first time and I'm currently focused on hostels in Delhi. From what I've read so far, Paharganj in Old Delhi is the traditional backpacker district, roughly equivalent to the Khao San Road neighbourhood in Bangkok. Paharganj, while central, looks like the stereotypical image of an Indian city - noisy, frenetic, dirty, lots of aggressive touts, and so on. There are several good hostels here.

There are also a lot of well-reviewed hostels in South Delhi (in and around the Green Park, Hauz Khas and Saket neighbourhoods) too, and all of them and their reviews proudly state that their part of Delhi is cleaner, quieter, safer and more modern. I've seen comments from other Indians that even they avoid visiting Old Delhi, but it does look like it has a unique charm of its own. The only possible negative is that the South Delhi hostels are about a 20-30 minute metro ride into the centre.

For those of you who have travelled to Delhi, what part of the city would you recommend staying in, and which hostel did you stay at? My current itinerary is to spend a couple days there, and then taking the train to Agra.
