Twin Cities > Badlands/Black Hills > Glacier National Park. Tips?
Girlfriend and I are planning a trip this summer from MSP to Glacier NP, through South Dakota on the way out and North Dakota on the way back. Planning to spend four full days getting from St. Paul to Glacier – stops in Badlands NP, Wind Cave/Custer, Devil’s Tower, etc… Then four full days in Glacier, and 3 full days for the drive back, working in Theodore Roosevelt NP, Enchanted Highway en route.
Primarily looking for tips on how best to navigate SW South Dakota as efficiently, but not hurriedly, as possible. Anybody have any experience with the road between Rockyford and Buffalo Gap/Hot Springs on the south side of Badlands? Tentative plan is to use that to get to Wind Cave/Custer and then head north through the Black Hills (Mt. Rushmore, Deadwood, Spearfish Canyon) on the way to Devil’s Tower, but wondering a) how long this route takes, b) how rough the road is (appears not to be paved), c) is it better or worse than heading back to I-90 and heading down to Wind Cave/Custer area via Rapid City. Additionally, have heard great things about Spearfish Canyon, but unsure how much time to budget if we go that route, factoring in overlooks, speed limit, traffic, etc…
All info/advice welcome! Thanks!
