Travelling across the US, first time solo travelling at 19. Lookin' for some advice

In a couple of months I'll be driving from Illinois to the Vancouver area, I'm not so concerned about the drive itself as much how to schedule the trip so I can really see the things (national parks) that I would like to along the way. I'll be making a pit stop in Northern California at a Buddhist monastery for about a week, so basically, how much time should I give myself between leaving Illinois and arriving in Northern California so I'll have some quality viewing and hiking time at these places? I really dont want to just drive right by everything. Also, any suggestions for cool places or parks to stop and check out and the best ways to see and get a feel for them would be much appreciated.

This next part might be better suited in r/vandwellers but Im also looking for some tips on the best ways/places to camp in your car for the night. I've heard a lot about the beauty that is a Walmart parking lot but I'd like to camp as close as possible to the parks and I was wondering if I would need some kind of permit to do so? Lastly, I just have some smaller things ive been thinking about, like what gym should I get a membership to so I always have a shower somewhat nearby? How do I not eat like shit while on the road? That's actually all I can think of right now. Anyways, thank you in advance for your tips and input. I really appreciate any and everything you have to say.
