Solo trip to East Asia
Hi there!
I am in the planning stages of a solo adventure before I start up at university again in August.
Travel period : July 3rd - Aug 5th
Countries: Japan (Tokyo, Kyoto), South Korea (Seoul), China (Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu) (also Hong Kong), Taiwan (Taipei), and Vietnam
Note : I realize this is an ambitious list of countries for the time alotted. Tbh I see lots of people recommending 2, 3 weeks in one place and having tried that I realize it's not my style. I prefer to sacrifice that feeling of really knowing a place for actually covering more ground and experiencing more. Perhaps has something to do with the rarity of these travel opportunities I have but it works for me.
Prev. Experience : Thailand twice, Cambodia, Vietnam (only Saigon), Malaysia, Singapore, Israel, Ethiopia, Canada and U.S
I am a decently experienced traveller, but not an experienced solo traveller, having only done parts of Canada and the U.S solo.
Interests : food (x1000), nature (specifically bike trails and hiking), city landscapes, beaches and islands, unique cultural experiences, animals, nightlife
I have done tons of research on Google and all that so I won't ask many obvious questions. But I do have a few that I couldn't really find good answers to, and for some reason I trust random Reddit advice more then random Google advice lol.
One country that I cannot get a good feel for is China. How is China for solo travel? Are language barriers a big issue? How about moving around the country on the cheap? I have come across a few rail options for getting around but they seem to be more expensive then a flight.
Can anyone speak for Taiwan? I am considering removing it for more time in Vietnam but I have FOMO and it's so close by...
Also, my impression of Japan is that Tokyo basically includes everything, and if you want more of one thing (temples, food, history, etc) then you would be wise to go outside to Kyoto, Osaka, etc. Is this wrong? I have looked at these places a bit on the internet and I just don't see anything that really draws me there, except for this notion that it would provide a better experience to see more then one place.
Can anyone recommend a good company for a DMZ tour?
Weather experiences in my chosen destinations for the July/August period?
Any other tips related to my interests?
Lastly, I want to see MT Fuji. What is the main activity that people do there? Do most people climb it? Is it wise to do an organized tour or go see it alone?
Thanks everybody and happy travelling!
