Safety of Central America?
Hey guys,
So I'm looking to go away this summer as it will be my last extended break before starting a 4 year PhD. Going through Latin America is top of my bucket list and so I wanted to make a start on it. I'm currently thinking of going through CA for 2 months, taking a standard route (Yucatan peninsula > Belize > Guatemala > Utila > Nicaragua)
However, I'm 22F and have only been on one solo trip before - Indonesia for a month and Hong Kong for 2 weeks which is a pretty easy trip. Looking back I was super relaxed in Indo - walking around in the day on my own, quickly checking google maps in the street etc
I don't speak Spanish although I would learn the basics before, and I'm pretty small and very fair skinned. My parents are really concerned and think that I shouldn't do CA alone because I would be an easy target. I've been doing loads of research but it seems to be a mixed bag so I'm starting to doubt myself a bit. I just wondered if anyone has experience or advice about what it's like? Or how it feels compared to SEA?
I'm kind of in two minds about whether to do CA or to do an Asia trip in that 2 month window instead (i.e. maybe Sri Lanka/Philippines/Vietnam).
