Recommendations for places in SE Asia that *aren't* islands?

So I'm planning on 10 months in SE Asia starting in June. I've been to Thailand before and explored most of the "typical" places (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, most islands of the south). Obviously with 10 months I'm going to be going back to Bangkok and Chiang Mai, and I'm excited - I loved them places.

Bringing me onto the point of the post, whilst I'm excited and want to explore some of the beautiful islands of SE Asia, where else would you recommend city-town wise, as I do really enjoy exploring cities and towns inland too. Obviously Hanoi is a standout and I'm excited to go there. I never got the chance to go Pai. I obviously know about Phnom Penh and some other cities, but I hear mixed things - so after some personal recommendations.
