Hive mind, I am going on a road trip across the U.S. and need some suggestions and tips!
In a few short weeks I am flying out to Seattle to gather my SO and begin a 10 day long vacation wandering our way back to Boston. We have a lot of it planned out (route and stops etc) but we are also both very fluid and adventurous and want to keep it very open ended. Sort of a "take it as it comes" sort of trip. The only time constraint that we have is the ten days, since I have to be back at work. Here is the very bare outline of our trip, its a very nontraditional route and we have deliberate reasons for the stops we are making. This is not about going straight across the country but about hitting places that we have always wanted to visit.
Starting in Seattle we are spending the day there, then driving down to Portland. From Portland we are planning to take California, I would love to take 1 all the way down the pacific coast and see Big Sur, but I know the road has been damaged by the devastating mud slides, I'm not sure that we will have the time to factor in going into Big Sur, then having to back track to get back out. The plan is to make it to Los Angeles. From there we are cutting across to Flagstaff AZ to visit some family. That might take two days. So at this point we may be starting day 5, this depends on how big of a fire we have under our asses. Ha. Going from Flagstaff we have a long haul across New Mexico and Texas to our next destination, Austin. I am so here for the food. All the food. Austin to New Orleans is the next leg, this is where it starts to get SUPER exciting. ALL. THE. FOOD. And maybe some voodoo...... but mostly food. This needs to be a solid 24 hours for sure. From New Orleans we are going straight up to Tennessee to go to on of our most important destinations, Husk, Nashville. (My SO and I are both in the culinary industry and this trip is mostly about, adventure, and good food.) From Nashville its a direct trip back up to Boston, there aren't any other major cities that we are trying to stop in, if we end up having any extra time (I don't think that we will) we may make one or two more pit stops in New England. I'm hoping that by asking my fellow Redditors, people from all over will have cool suggestions about places to see or try. This is a very flexible trip and any suggestions are welcomed and appreciated! We will be doing a combo of camping, staying in cheap motels, and possibly one or two nicer hotels when we get to Austin, New Orleans, and Nashville. We are trying to keep costs as low as possible even though we have a substantial emergency budget if necessary.
I'm hoping I didn't miss anything!
Thanks!
