Australia Work Holiday - First Steps
Hi All,
26, M, UK. After a gentle push by a family member, I've finally applied for (And was astonishingly quickly accepted for) a working holiday visa in Australia. I've now booked my flight to Brisbane from the UK and am scheduled to arrive in early June.
I'm really excited. I'm going to hand my notice in at work in the next few weeks and I'm currently in the process of getting things sorted. There are a few things I am little concerned about that I'd like some advice with:
-
Accommodation: My plan is to book a cheap AirBnB for two or three weeks when I arrive. I'm not sure I can stomach a hostel while I'm still trying to get acclimatised to my surroundings (Although, I admit, this will be necessary sooner or later). Where will I likely be staying while I'm working? Is it common to just slum it at hostels while doing jobs, or should I look into a flat share with someone?
-
Socialising: I'm an introvert and I feel I can be shy at times. I'm a little concerned my reserve might be at odds with what I expect of the types of people that do working holidays. At one point in my life, I had issues with alcohol dependency. I drink very rarely now and don't really imbibe like I once did. Will this be a problem when making friends/meeting new people?
-
Second Year Extension: I'm not sure I'll make it a year in Australia to be honest - my rationale is that I'm going on this working holiday to get some perspective on what I want to do in life, also to become more independent and have to really 'do things for myself.' That being said, doing farm work sounds like a nice way to build a nest egg and - on the off chance I'm braver than I thought and think I can stay longer - it'd be nice to be do this for a few months. Has anyone got any recommendations on getting this work/perspectives on what it's like? I'm curious about what accomodation will be like, and if anybody has worked for a farm that didn't have accomodation on site and how they got by.
Sorry if this is a little nebulous. I'm excited, but at the same time have a lot of questions.
