Vietnam in September - Pleasant or Terrible?
Was planning on taking a solo trip to Vietnam in the fall and was pretty set on November, but now I'm considering changing my mind. Since my focus will probably be in the North, I'm considering changing it to either early or late September, probably the former.
I realize that it would mean a lot of playing everything by ear because trips like Halong Bay or Ninh Binh may need to be postponed, and that places in the South could be just as wet and I'm stuck with bad weather everywhere (as opposed to November which would be dry at more places), but on the other hand I would see the golden rice fields, tourism (and prices) would be lower, and chances of spending some quality time in Hue or Hoi An are much more likely than in November when flooding is very possible. I'm also being concerned that if I go in November and even though everything will be dry, it will also be more drab, especially in Ninh Binh or Sapa where the fields will be depleted.
I guess my concern is that for every place that suggests September as a good time, there seems to be others complaining that between the heat and humidity, that trying to do anything outside becomes an unbearable task. I'm a pasty white Canadian guy so I'm worried I would agree, but maybe they are exaggerating and/or it's easy to go to outside tourist attractions early in the morning.
I guess I'm seeing if anyone has their own experience of coming in September and whether you think I would enjoy it. Did you find it a fun adventure? Was Sapa beautiful to take a picture of, but the trekking was a slog through mud and rain? Did you find the weather hot but exciting or did you spend half your day inside next to the air conditioner? Thanks.
