Travelling to Germany for work. I will have 6-7 days afterwards to do whatever I want.

Edit: I have already done a lot of research and have a few ideas. I just want to make sure that I am on the right track and won't miss a hidden gem.

I have solo traveled Italy after a work trip, and I had an amazing time. This time, I'll be flying into Munich March 20th, having a "day of rest" for the older people on the trip March 21st, then working in Augsburg on March 22. After that, I have March 23 - 28 to do whatever.

I can't decide what to see in Germany. I am very into WWII history and old architecture/art, so I will probably go to Dachau on March 21st. Other than that, should I go down to Switzerland? Should I make my way to Berlin stopping along the way? Should I travel up to the areas around Düsseldorf?

The only constraint is that I need to end somewhere with a major airport.

One of my favorite parts of Italy was the train/bus rides to see the countryside, so I will be doing that.

Any thoughts? If it matters, I am American, but I took 4 years of German in college.

Edit: I would love to see a bad ass castle.
