Travelling Thailand. Detour to Ko Pha Ngan worthwhile or efficient?
Travelling to Thailand at the end of the month for a couple weeks solo. My first time in SE Asia but keep hearing and reading great things. I didn't plan much, but I got my flight in to Phuket, then out of Bangkok booked two weeks apart. (Spending the weekend in Seoul on the way back too)
The tentative plans I had in my head were to spend a week in Phuket, then head up to Chiang Mai for a few days before heading to Bangkok.
I recently learned that a travel buddy is going to be in Thailand the same time, but will be staying on Ko Pha Ngan. While I had actually been thinking about going out to the island myself. It seemed like it's not the easiest to just detour out to. While most of the flights between Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Bangkok are inexpensive, flying in and out of the island isn't so cheap.
I was thinking travelling overland to the Ko Pha Ngan then flying out of nearby Ko Sumai might be a reasonable way to do it. But not sure how easy that is to arrange.
If any other travellers familiar with the area have any thoughts let me know. I'm not really hard or fast on anything and am expecting a great time whether I get to reconnect with my friend or not.
