Solo travelling in the (West)US/Canada
Hi Solo Travellers,
I stumbled across this sub Reddit while researching for travelling guide and tips. A bit about myself before I get in too deep!
I'm 24 years old and I'm from Australia. I've solo travelled before but relied on my extended family and friends. I'd like to change that so I'm here for some guidance! I've recently graduated and now working full time. I haven't really got a break from school and work. I've been planning but nothing has been set into motion.
My plan is to travel to the US, I really love the country and culture over there. So my ideal trip would begin on the West Coast which I'm familiar with and starting off in California to visit some family and friends. I plan to move up the West Coast either though driving or plane. Going to Portland and Seattle (never been so I'm excited). Then move up to Canada and go to some of the major cities ( Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal) to visit some friends and wrap it up and head home. If I have time then I might go to the East coast and do a bit of travelling there but no plans for the East yet!
So my question to you is what's the best way to approach (drive/bus/plane)? Money is no objective but I'll bring a substantial amount to offset my spending as I'm not staying with family or friends for most of the trip.
I'd love to visit the national parks, get a feel for the night life as well as regular day stuff. Meeting new people and making friends along the way is also exciting for me (quite shy and introvert but I want to change that). I was considering a tour but this seems better and gives me more freedom.
I plan to do this in 2-4 weeks as I don't get much leave with work. This will be around the summer time for you northerners as I want to escape the winter here( early to mid-July, mid-August etc.) I'd like to drive up but the other side of the road seems a bit terrifying, but that limits my travel plans if I don't drive. I plan to stay at hostels, couch surfing as I've discovered on here or Airbnb.
Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.
