My take on flying cheap...
As a young solo-traveler, I-like many-like to keep things cheap when it comes to transport. My transport of choice is flying.
Now, I live in Canada where flying one-way to another province is upwards of $500. So during my travels to Europe I grabbed at the chance of flying to another country for less than $20.
I booked several flights through RyanAir before reading tons of horror stories from disappointed travellers. I began to panic as I felt that I had made the wrong choice in choosing them.
But I was wrong.
See, as a solo traveller, it’s just me, my suitcase(carry on) and purse. I thoroughly read Ryanair’s terms and conditions, baggage policy and more reviews.
Most of the bad reviews came from people being separated from their companions due to randomly allocated seats(which RA states may happen when you book) and the inevitable delays. Or that the airport is in the middle of no where.
Here is my experience with flying low cost;
-
Low-cost is low cost for a reason! Don’t expect Emirate style flying, or to be waited on hand and foot. Flying with RA includes your seat and carryon. With their new policy the carry on will be put in the hold free of charge. Seats are “randomly” allocated when you sign in or you can choose to pay for a seat. I put quotation marks around randomly because it seems as though I always get a window seat, while couples travelling get split up in aisles and middle.
-
It’s not going to be a comfortable flight. Low cost carries like to use as much space as possible, making those who are taller than average uncomfortable. Don’t expect your seat to recline.
-
The distance from the city. Flying into London Gatwick for example, is farther than heathrow from the city. Most of the airports where the low cost carriers fly into have train, bus or taxis that will directly get you to the city centre or close. If booking a hostel through hostelworld, the exact directions will be posted.
As long as you plan accordingly, things should be fine.
TL;DR: Flying a low-cost carrier such as RyanAir, Easyjet etc isn’t as bad as it seems.
