Lyon vs Paris for solo travel? Or another French city?

I (F/US) plan to do workaway in a rural area of France late summer/early fall. After, I would like to spend at least a week visiting a city and having a more traditional solo travel experience there (staying in hostels, not working, going out, etc).

So here's the thing: I spent three weeks in Paris studying with a friend in 2015. I absolutely love Paris and would always love to go back, but another part of me is very interested in seeing a new city I haven't been to before.

I've heard good things about Lyon, and it seems to still be a big enough city with good public transport (important). So I'm considering spending at least 4 days - 1 week there.

I'm mostly interested in walking around parks, reading and writing in cafes, going to markets, eating, finding interesting shops, just kind of getting lost in the city and taking photos. Maybe go to a museum or two if it's something I'm interested in. I like to spend my days alone, but am usually down to go out to bars with other travelers or anyone I meet after.

So is there a good hostel scene in Lyon for solo travelers? I also found that most people in Paris were surpisingly very open and it was easy to meet people. Is the same true for Lyon? Would you say it's a good place to spend some time in, or should I stick with Paris?

I'm definitely open to other French city reccomendations too!
