Istanbul to Berlin, overland, quickly - where to stop?

Hi r/solotravel ! I’m currently making my way across Asia overland with the aim of arriving in Istanbul by the end of March. After this I’ll be going home to Berlin. I’m aware that the most straightforward and probably cheapest way to return would be to book a flight from Istanbul (or Thessaloniki or Sofia), but I’m reluctant to break my overland streak and am considering bussing it across Europe in two or three days.

Rome2rio gives a direct journey time of around 48 hours, transiting somewhere in Bulgaria. I’m thinking to stretch it out a little longer, and break the journey into three parts with two overnight stops en route. I’ve been playing around with options but I’m not so familiar with the transport companies in South Eastern Europe, so I’m after your advice. I’m trying to keep a balance between being as cheap and fast as possible, without extensively long journeys (exceeding 12 hours, I guess).

My two questions are: * Where is best to break up the journey? * Which method of transport (bus company, etc) would you recommend?

I’m not so interested in the locations themselves, since I’ve previously visited pretty much all major cities that could be a transit point on the route, and I won’t have time to properly enjoy them anyway. I’ll also immediately rule out Prague, since if I can make it there, I can manage the final four hours home.
