Ireland/Scotland for first time solo traveler - package or plan on my own?

I plan to travel to Ireland and Scotland later this year and it will be my first solo vacation! I'm a woman of fairly small stature and I'm a bit intimidated, but find the the idea exhilarating and liberating, as well.

With this being my first such trip, would you suggest going through some type of online travel organizer or agent.. or planning my own trip? I am open to either idea, but I would love to have opinions from anyone, but especially someone who has tried both planning his or her own trip and also gone through an organizer.
