Gap year volunteering abroad
Hey!
So, for some context, I'm from Europe and almost finishing high school, and I have had this idea for quite some time of taking a gap year before proceeding to university.
Now, during this year I'd love to go volunteering in southeastern Asia, as well as India, Nepal and Japan. I've looked into sites such as workaway, gobroad and helpx and I'm positive that I'd be able to spend very little money on everything other than transportation. Those are cheap and safe countries for the most part, and I've never been anywhere near Asia, so I'm beyond excited.
I'm making all these plans together with a friend who had the same desire to travel before college, but he's not so sure that his mom will let him... He turns 18 in September and I in November, but we can't just do it without our parents' approval, sadly. Mine already said they'd let me if he comes with me, that I absolutely can't go alone, but I just don't know anyone else who would drop everything for a year and accompany me god knows where... And I need a backup plan.
In the end, my question lies in whether I should pressure them to let me go alone (is this a good idea? I don't feel any fear or anything, but I've never traveled solo before...), or... Just wait?
Also, my friend has something else in mind, that he'd like to keep going beyond Japan and into either the US or South America and then back to Europe. I think that'd wreck our budget, but that's something we have yet to discuss.
Have any of you ever volunteered? I've been reading a lot about it and there are many advantages, both career wise and in a self growth prospect. Ah! I really want to do this!
