First solo/first international trip to Amsterdam. What do I do?

I'm 28 and I'm finally doing my first solo trip and first trip abroad with a 4 day/3 night stay in Amsterdam. I've never been outside America and only speak English so I've been told Amsterdam is a good place to start. I'm staying at a chain hotel in the city center.

In addition to the stereotypical things (museums, check out the tulips, coffee shops, observing the red light district, bike ride...) I'd also like to find some quiet/dive bars to just sit outside and take in the city as well as find some cool spots for some pictures.

Any suggestions for first time solo/international/amsterdam?
