Can we talk about the 'shithole countries' mentality for a moment?
Just like the rest of you, I love to travel. I got back from my last solo trip in November and I've been itching to get back ever since. I've been looking into several options mostly in SE Asia. However, the other day I had a great conversation at work with someone from Ecuador. On a break, I looked into the pricing and saw how affordable a flight there was. I got really excited and told my coworkers about how amazing it looked and several of them said that the price was low because no one would ever want to go to a country like that. Does anyone else find it really irritating how close minded people can be about places they've never seen? I think it would do Americans good to get a passport and see how other people live now and again. Some of the most beautiful and memorable moments of my life have been in countries that people think are shitholes or not worth going because they won't be staying at a nice hotel doing absolutely nothing to be immersed in the local culture.
Thoughts?
