When did Hostels become more expensive than Hotels?
Just came back from a four month trip through Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
I can't remember the last time I took a hotel room but I got sick in BaƱos, Ecuador and decided to skip on a dorm.
Looked around town and found a local hotel (not on booking.com) and discovered the price was 10$ for a single room.
I mostly tend to book through Hostelworld or Booking, and most hostels tend to be between 8-15$ for a dorm bed. But throughout this trip I have been staying at more and more hotels simply because they are so cheap.
The fact that I'm paying more for a dorm bed annoys the hell out of me. Most places I have traveled to have hotel rooms (even bad ones) that are at least 2-3x as expensive as hostel dorms.
When did these hostels get so expensive?
