Road Trip advice - Toronto to Orlando
background, first of all...
We're both experienced long distance drivers. My wife and I will drive 7 hours up to Sault Ste. Marie for a long weekend (her family is up there), and we've taken our kids on road trips to Disney three times in the last 7 years (they're now 15 and 12.) Our previous trips we crossed the border at Sarnia-Port Huron and took I-75. It takes an hour longer, according to google maps, but it's a simple trip; a single interstate all the way from Michigan to Florida. We'll typically drive until midnight or so on the first day.
We're going again in March, leaving on a Tuesday afternoon (hope to leave about noon.) We're taking a different route this time, crossing at Buffalo and taking I-90 to Erie PA, then I-79 through Pittsburgh down to Hwy 19 in WV, which meets up with I-64 and then I-77, through Charlotte NC and Columbia SC until we hit I-95.
Much more complicated, but significantly faster, according to everything I've read.
Our trip down will be in a rush. I want to hit Orlando by 5pm the next day.
What are the major traffic bottlenecks to worry about? I've read I-77 through Charlotte should be avoided at rush hour, so I'll try to get past Charlotte on day 1, even if it means driving until 1AM, but I can't find out what I-79 is like in Pittsburgh.
