Questions about Southern and Eastern Africa

Hi reddit,

I am hoping to make it to my final continent this year and am looking for some advice!

The route that I am thinking

Vancouver > Cape Town > Namibia > Botswana > Zimbabwe? > Zambia? > Mozambique? > Malawi > Tanzania > Kenya > Uganda? > Vancouver

So as you can see I still a little uncertain about where exactly I want to go between Botswana and Tanzania but I might just try to figure that out when I get there. It partly depends on the political situations in places like Zimbabwe and maybe Mozambique, and of course time (roughly 4-5 months) and money.

I am currently slaving away at work and hoping to have around 20k CAD saved up but would like to return with at least a decent chunk left and would be travelling pretty tight, but from what I understand that can be Africa can be quite expensive. Is there a large price difference between these countries as a traveler?

Since I am planning to essentially stay for as long as possible I was thinking about volunteering while I am there. How easy would it be to find something along my travels there that doesn’t really cost me a whole lot of money to do?

I was aiming to leave around mid October but I have heard that this is the start of a long rainy season in Southern Africa, I can deal with heat (spent a long time in northern Australia) but don’t want constant rain to ruin my trip and cause insane delays on the roads. Also I have heard malaria is more present at this time, is this a genuine concern?

How is transport in this area? I have read about mini buses and other means of transport but are there areas that I could potentially find myself that have means in and out other than hitch hiking?

When it comes to safaris I will probably only do one as they are quite expensive, is there a country I can go and get the best bang for my buck?

When it comes to safety I understand that the continent is still developing and can be dodgy but if I don’t go out past sunset should I potentially be okay? I have decent travel smarts and have no yet been robbed or had any trouble but I do travel with my camera which is quite expensive.

I have always been curious about Africa and have always wanted to know what it is really like, because I know there is more to it than civil wars and mud huts like we see on TV.

General recommendations on any countries or places and tips are greatly appreciated!
