North America Trip Planning - Public Transport vs Car
Hi All,
My boyfriend and I will be taking a 4 month road trip to North America starting early August through to early Nov. We are from Australia and will be travelling via Hawaii on the way there. We have found cheap flights (total ~$630 AUD) that go through Hawaii to San Francisco.
We have collated all the places that we'd both like to go to (link below) and are trying to make a route of it. We were thinking of starting by renting a car and doing a loop around San Francisco, down the coast to San Diego, up to Colorado and back to San Francisco going to all the beautiful national parks in between.
From there we are unsure of the public transportation between major cities. As we are both 23 (with full Australian licenses), we are most likely going to be slammed with a Young Drivers fee so we are also trying to use public transport where we can to cut down on costs. (We will be checking with Australian travel agents too to see if we can get any good deals.) However, we don’t want to miss out on anywhere because we are unable to get there without a car.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to use public transport vs where not to? And have we missed anywhere that you’d recommend? Thanks in advance!
