Meeting friends in Riga- where should I go (solo) from there?
I'm a late 20s American female grad student with a fair amount of solo travel experience in Europe. For my spring holiday in March, I'll be meeting some friends for a weekend in Riga. I have the next week/weekend free, and want to explore more in that area. I'll be traveling solo, and my nightmare is staying too long in a boring city... My current idea was to head to Vilnius next, and finish in Warsaw. Thoughts? I've also heard interesting things about Kaunas.
Also, if anyone has any general tips on traveling solo in this region, or any recommendations for hostels, neighborhoods, or activities where it's good/easy to meet folks (travelers or locals), let me know! I enjoy the freedom of solo travel, but I know I'll be dying for some company before the week is over.
Background info on me: I don't speak any of the regional languages, but I am comfortable traveling solo in countries where English isn't prevalent and the infrastructure isn't as fully developed. However, I also don't want to give my parents a heart attack by going somewhere that Google will suggest is dangerous to them (for example, they'd probably freak out if I said I was going to Ukraine)- both out of kindness and necessity, as they help support me financially while i'm in graduate school.
I'm a big fan of history and really like learning about the culture of a country while I'm there. Love WWII and post-WWII history, as well as a good old town/old country area. I am also down for some cool nature and outdoorsy opportunities and I'm not afraid of the cold.
I've been to Tallinn before, and while I loved it, I'd like to see some new places. I've also been to Helsinki and Krakow. I don't think I have time to get more than a transit visa to Russia at this point, so I think St. Petersburg isn't in the cards for me this time (but if I'm wrong on that, let me know). Ideally, I'd like to end somewhere where it's relatively easy to fly back to the States (like Warsaw).
