How intense is India for the first-time traveller?

I am seriously considering doing a solo trip to India for Feb 2019 for about 2 weeks. Some background info and questions for those who have been:

  • Male, will be 39 at that time and I've done a pretty decent amount of travel in the developing world (SEA and four trips to Africa) and a ton of hostels and solo travels over the years. I'm quite comfortable exploring cities and remote villages on my own, I make friends easily, that kind of thing. Backpacking is my jam!

How do the big cities of India compare in terms of intensity to a place like Cairo, Marrakech or Hanoi? I'm still working on my itinerary, but I'm looking at a 35/65 mix between big cities (Delhi, Agra, Varanasi) and quieter regions like Goa or Kerala, staying in hostels, homestays and getting myself my own hut in Goa.

Overall, how easy is it to get around? I'm perfectly fine to fly from place to place (prices seem quite cheap), but would love to take some trains to get that quintessential Indian experience.

ETA: Sorry, the title should be "for the first-time visitor", not "traveller". That would definitely be jumping into the deep end!
