Going to Vietnam for one month; which direction should I travel?

Hi all. I'm on a four month solo trip (my very first!) and plan to go to Vietnam for a month from Feb 10- Mar 10, then move on to Cambodia an Laos. I'm debating if it makes more sense to go north to south, or south to north, based on the weather. Whether I then go to Cambodia or Laos is partly depending on a friend joining me and he hasn't confirmed yet, so that doesn't affect the decision.

I mostly packed for t-shirt and shorts weather. Considering it's colder in the north right now, would it make since to start from the south end? Or is north to south a better route to do? Most of the posts I've read seem to go that way. Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated!
