Going to USA alone (24/M)
So this'll be my first trip out of the UK by myself, and my first trip really travelling around, rather than staying by the sea.
I've been planning on heading to the USA for a few months now, and it's only really in the last week or so I've really gotten around to truly planning things. My plans have morphed from visiting one city for one week, to visiting 2 cities for a week each, to tacking on a couple of days in DC at the start and flying everywhere.
I've booked my time off at work, and my manager has let me have 3 weeks off from 26 Feb to 20 Mar. I've now settled on flying into DC, then getting the bus/train around instead of flying everywhere - that way I can save on travel, and stay longer and visit more cities instead.
After researching hostels, and bus/train routes and times, this is my itinerary as it stands, although my coworkers have told me not to plan toooo much as I may fall in love with some places and want to stay longer:
Arrive in Washington DC in the afternoon on 27 Feb, stay until 1 Mar, and get the Megabus to Philadelphia. Stay in Philadelphia until 5 Mar, and head to Pittsburgh that morning. Arrive in Pittsburgh that evening, and leave on 7 Mar for Cleveland. Stay in Cleveland for a night, and head to Detroit the next morning. Go to Chicago on 9 Mar for a night, and leave for Madison on 10 Mar. After 3 nights in Madison, go to Minneapolis for 2 nights, before flying to New Orleans on 15 Mar. After 4 nights in New Orleans, fly back to London on the 19th.
The main reason I've picked 27 Feb and 19 Mar as the start and end is flight costs - an outbound flight from Gatwick to Baltimore on 27 Feb is £150 and the flight home from New Orleans is £209. Obviously I am anticipating extra costs from the airlines but that wouldn't be too much of an issue for me.
I'm also planning on booking rooms in hostels for the main parts of the trip, in DC, Philadelphia, Madison and New Orleans later this week. Detroit and Chicago also have hostels. For everywhere else I'm planning on booking a hotel room the night before from a price comparison website.
I'm also not planning on booking the flight to New Orleans until the day before, as I'm not entirely sure I'll be flying from Minneapolis on the 15th. I've looked at next-day flights on Skyscanner, and they seem to be a similar price to those booked in advance.
Besides seeing the Capitol building in DC, I'm not really all that interested in doing many "touristy" things - the main purpose of the trip is really to just travel around, meet people, check out a few cities and in some cases, the nightlife.
I get paid roughly £600 every two weeks, and besides giving a quarter of my pay to my parents as "rent", my phone bill (around £30 a month) and train fares to and from work (roughly £60 a month), I don't have any bills to pay. I also have a payday 4 days before I'm planning to fly, and as I'm taking paid holiday, another payment should come in while I'm out there. I don't really want to use my debit card but if it's needed, I know I will have enough in my bank account.
My main concern is - is this plan viable? And am I trying to cram too much into 3 weeks? This is my first time planning something like this so I feel like I'm really missing something vital or messing something up along the way.
