GF broke up with me one month before European trip for two. Trying to decide what to do.
I am starting a new job across the US in February. I planned a graduation trip for 2.5 weeks in late January that goes Dublin -> London -> Paris -> Brussels -> Amsterdam with a family friend who runs his own travel agency. Spending 2-3 days in each city. I have already paid ~4,000 USD, all the hotels, flights, and trains are booked.
Unfortunately my GF decided that she did not want to follow me and my job across the country. I am stuck with this trip and I do not know what to do.
My first option is to obviously cancel everything, but I will take around a 2,000 USD loss. This is super painful but I am not sure if I can handle going on this trip alone. I am not sure how I will feel about things in one month's time, but being that this breakup is so fresh I cannot imagine myself having fun.
On the other hand it might be really good for me to get out and start this new phase of my life by going to see some of the world I've never seen before. I am extremely nervous about traveling alone, mainly because one of the things I wanted to do most was barhop and explore night life. I also feel like her absence will be haunting me the entire time
If I go alone, should I cancel my hotels and try to book hostels? Would this be a good way of meeting other travelers in the winter in Europe or should I try to stick with hotels? I don't know anything about hostels so would I have to go the backpack route in this case or is normal luggage fine like a hotel?
Any other thoughts or input from someone who has been in a similar situation?
TL;DR GF broke one month before europe trip. I can either cancel for a 2k USD loss or try to go alone, but I am nervous that I won't have any fun because I will be thinking about her absence the whole time.
